Celis Brewery

This one's not so old, but just as distant a memory. For a time, we had a taste of Hoegaarden, in our own garden. Golden, White, Pale Boch, Grand Cru, Raspberry... which was your favorite? Personally, I liked a Raspberry Cru myself. You can still get the White in some places, compliments of the Michigan Brewing Company.

Clicks

And who could forget Clicks? Well, maybe everybody. So, here's your reminder of what a smokey pool bar dive oughta be. I remember it being over on Airport Blvd near the old Nighthawk Drive Inn. Is this the more modern version?

Oooh! Nighthawk. I have a book from there too...

Giddings High School Buffaloes

A High School sponsored matchbook? Granted this is East Central Texas and a couple-three decades old, but can you imagine the NEA's reacion to this? Nevertheless, it brings back fond memories of Friday nights spent under sodium arch lamps watching Texas Highschool Football. Go Buffaloes!

Oat Willie's

Truly an Austin legend. And its NOT a "head shop." Everyone has an O.W. story, but few people are willing to share, even if they could remember. I'd have to ask my Sister about its origins, since the establishment predates me. And its still around.

Alien

We thought that this was a fittingly intriguing way to begin the adventure, noting that even popular motion pictures advertised in this fashion.

Introduction to the Daily Matchbook...

I'd been collecting matchbooks and boxes since I was 10 years old. Growing up in Austin, Texas, most of my collection originated in Central Texas. As the years went by, it reached somewhat beyond though friends, family and my own travels. Now at 42, I pulled out a dusty old plastic Tote from my garage with the intent to sell the contents in a summer Garage Sale. But, as me and my 6 year old son sifted through the contents of the sizeable old collection, I realized there were stories there, long forgotten, in a medium nearly obsolete. My son and I decide to share each matchbook with you... one day at a time.
